Francis Kamara was to have a dangerous tumor removed from the left side of his neck in 2014, but his family hid him out of fear that he would die in surgery. Instead, they sought help from native healers, which is a common practice here in Sierra Leone. But the tumor continued to grow and in January 2016 the family allowed Africa Surgery to have it removed by the oral surgeon attached to the main government hospital in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone.
Francis’ face was still swollen and very tender only two days after his surgery, but he managed to smile anyway.
