Despite the recent flare-up of Ebola in Sierra Leone, this week we were able to transport 24 patients about 34 miles to the nearest eye hospital. Six were admitted for surgery to take place the next day–five to have their vision, lost due to cataracts, restored, and one to prevent blindness caused by pterygium, a growth that slowly covers the exterior surface of the eyes. Two are glaucoma patients whom we continually have to treat. Most of rest were medically treated for corneal ulcers, infections or allergies.
